After a great end to a summer Traveball season, its time for tryouts all this week, this past summer had to be one of the better summers I've seen in Talent in the last few years, the Girls and teams are getting better along with some Softball programs ,every year Teams try to look to get better for all kinds of reasons, just know its a team effort but sometimes coaches aren't always in it for the kids and are just in it for their Egos, and look to recruit from other programs just to win, winning is great but at what cost?
I've seen some top stud kids go to programs just to win, and guess what ? they didn't win because they were not having fun, and when a teenage girl is not having fun, she is not going to give it her all. Just like Us adults if we are not having fun at something it becomes more like a job.
I had a chance to speak to 3 young ladies a couple weeks ago after the Midwest PGF, when I asked them if they were coming back to their teams, 2 of them didn't even let me finish my sentence, their words were nope, I don't think so. So I asked why, they both said they were not having fun and they felt like the coaches didn't like them and really didn't talk to them , now all 3 of these girls can go D1 or D2, but to hear that from a 16 yr old girl, that didn't sit well in my gut. 1 kid was a pitcher who had just pitched a hell of game and the other was the catcher who had just caught 3 games in a row. now Im a coach myself and hearing this made me relook at some of the things im doing as a father and a coach /mentor, now the 3rd kid said she might come back ,but she wasn't a fan of the coaches, she liked the girls on the team, but got yelled at too much ,after while she was playing not to make a error. WOW
Now take this as you want, but this is coming from 3 teenage girls who were on a high level A team, you can always improve on yourself ,but you can never take back your actions wrong or right.
Good luck at tryouts, give it all you got!!
