I have to say I've had a few so called experts advise me to separate my life as a travel softball coach and my job as the head softball writer for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Sorry, won't happen.
Anybody who knows me is well aware that I say things as I see it and don't apologize for it afterward. The day I become politically correct is the day I've let society take away my soul.
So from time to time I will give my opinions on both the travel softball circuit and the high school sports scene.
I think there is too much arrogance in travel softball and everybody needs to mind their own team and association and realize this is about the kids not your personal goals to become a somebody in the game.
I have a very talented 16U team called the Illinois Fire and I am proud to be their coach. Running around grabbing the top players in the Midwest isn't coaching to me. That's recruiting and I see that as an entirely different forum of softball. Now don't knock the other programs that don't have that luxury. Programs that build up kids from the 10U level is where the real hard work is getting done. They all had to start somewhere and give some credit to the programs who developed that Division I player now wearing your jersey.
My team will play in PGF, ASA, and NSA. We are spreading to love and looking forward to playing against any different programs.
The high school season is right around the corner. I'll be discussing what to loom for in future threads.
