Softball: Beverly Bandits defeat frosh/soph all-stars 4-0
By Paul Johnson For Sun-Times Media June 18, 2014
Downers Grove South softball player Caroline Hedgecock still gets excited to get the chance to play on the Chicago Bandits’ field.
“Playing on the Bandits field is always so much fun,” Hedgecock said. “It’s strange thinking that all the pitchers you grew up looking up to pitched on the same mound. I always get a little fan girl and freak out. It’s a lot of fun.”
Hedgecock and a team of frosh/soph high school all-stars took on a squad of Beverly Bandits from their 14-U and 16-U teams Wednesday at the Ballpark in Rosemont.
Hedgecock and the rest of the girls only had the chance to warm up on the outdoor stadium field before storms forced the event next door to the Dome. The Bandits posted a 4-0 win behind a complete game shutout by Alexis Holloway of Crown Point, Indiana.
Holloway, a sophomore who is committed to Notre Dame, struck out 11 and walked none while allowing just two hits.
“They had some really great hitters,” Holloway said. “It was definitely a challenge for me. I thought I threw pretty well. I worked from behind a lot, but overall it was pretty good. The defense played great out there. It was overall a great job by everybody.”
Susie Baranski got the Bandits on the board in the bottom of the first when she reached on an error and scored on a Holloway single. In the fifth, Holloway and Taylor Johnson singled and came around to score on an error to make it 3-0. Dani Williams led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch-hit single and scored on a groundout.
Holloway took care of the rest in the circle.
“We came out there and definitely wanted to win,” said Hedgecock, who had one of the team’s two hits. “The Bandits are a great team. It’s fun to get out there and compete against the best. (Holloway) is a really good pitcher. I just had to get my pitch. You can’t be intimidated.”
The weather didn’t cooperate with the start time, with lightning sirens going off three times, forcing the event indoors.
“It would have been nice to be able to stay outside, but thank God we have this so we could still get the game in,” Bandits coach and founder Bill Conroy said. “State-of-the-art facility here, so it was nice to get the game in.”
