Cal's All-Star Angel Foundation
Meet Drew, a 13 year old from Geneva fighting non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A previous wish recipient, Kevin (a 3.5 year cancer survivor) was able to deliver Drew's wish. Drew happens to be the son of one of Kevin's former high school teachers. Thank you to all of our supporters for allowing us to grant Drew's wish and Kevin was so thankful he was able to deliver it!
"What an amazing opportunity for Kevin and I to deliver Drew's wish to him. Drew was absolutely thrilled. The minute we walked in the door a HUGE smile spread across his face. This was no small feat as he had a mouth full of sores from the chemo and it hurt to talk, smile, or laugh. He was thrilled with the X box, extra controller, and game but when we brought in the TV, he was speechless. Another big smile!
It was very cool to watch an instant "bond" form between he and Kevin. It wasn't long before Drew and Kevin were exchanging chemo stories. Drew showed Kevin his port and biopsy scar and then asked Kevin to show him his biopsy and port scar. Kevin gave Drew a pep talk and offered some tips that helped him through chemo when he was going through it. As we drove away, Kevin said he felt very honored and grateful to Cal's Angels for honoring a wish to Drew and for being the person allowed to deliver it.
Drew's mom sent me a message that same night telling me that Drew had not smiled that big in a long time. She said the game was already set up and they had invited a friend over for the next day to come play it with Drew. You see, Drew just turned 13 and with it being summer, all of his friends are very active in sports and activities that Drew is no longer able to engage in due to the weakness the chemo has caused him. Once in awhile a friend will stop by to visit him but does not stay very long as there was nothing for them to do. WELL, that has changed since his wish was granted! Drew's mom said the effect of having something to do and having friends around was huge on Drew's mood. She said he was a new boy since having the wish delivered!
